Waste newspapers and magazines are delivered by truck and rail to the plant. After pulping, the paper is screened and cleaned to remove debris. Ink is removed by flotation. The recycled pulp then is bleached and brightened in the approach flow to the paper machine process. There is one further screening and cleaning that produces a raw material equivalent in quality to virgin pulp.

The heart of the Whiby operation is a Voith paper machine which employs state-of–the–art technology and is capable of producing an annual 150,000 tonnes of newsprint. The machine’s gap former provides uniform formation and represents the most current technology for newsprint production. From the paper machine, rolls of newsprint are transferred to a high-speed winder for slitting and winding onto cores. Completed rolls of newsprint are weighed, wrapped and shipped by truck or rail to newspapers and commercial printers across the continent.
